Eesti Agrenska and Tammistu centre
In the late 90ties discussions took place to start a national centre for children with disabilities and their families, similar to the Swedish Ågrenska. The Eesti Agrenska Foundation, Sihtasutus Eesti Agrenska Fond, a non-governmental, non-profit organization, was established in January 2003.
The founders are:
- Tartu University
- Tartu University Hospital
- Children´s Clinic of Tartu University Hospital
- Estonian Board of Disabled People
- Stenström´s Shirt Factory, Eesti OÜ
- Ågrenska, Sweden
The overall purpose is to develop services for children and teenagers with disabilities and their families, aiming at enhanced quality of life, integration and equal opportunities.
Cooperation with authorities
Since the beginning of the 2000, there has been a rapid development of the recognition and development of rights and services for people with disabilities in Estonia.
The aim and programs of Eesti Agrenska are supported by politicians and employées on local, regional and central level and many of the activities are carried out in cooperation with their representatives.
The Tammistu centre
In 2000 Stenström´s shirtmakers bought a property in Tammistu, about 15 km north-east of Tartu.
In 2003 this property was donated to the foundation.
The estate was in a bad condition and a thorough restauration was needed. Thanks to EU-programs, other projects, authorities (Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Social Affairs) and donors the restauration has been carried out, step by step. The renovation of the manor house started in 2006 and was completed in August 2015. Throughout these years Eesti Agrenska has developed and provided services, partly on rented premises close to Tammistu, partly on our own premises and on some occasions in the children´s hospital.
Eesti Agrenska provides the following programs
- Family courses
- Information days for parents
- Respite care and summer camps
- Daily activities/adapted work for young adults with disabilities
- Education for professionals
In October 2007 Eesti Agrenska was inaugurated by Queen Silvia of Sweden, in the presence of Mrs Evelin Ilves, First Lady of Estonia.
In order to further develop our services and be able to offer all of them completely on our own premises at Tammistu, the most important and urgent need is to build modern facilities to accomodate up to 50 people at a time.
